What Does a Session Involve?
Gentle, safe and effective — here is exactly what to expect when you come for Dorn Method therapy or a Breuss Massage.
It's completely natural to feel a little unsure about therapy involving the spine and joints. The Dorn Method, however, is designed to be gentle, calm, and non-forceful. All movements are guided and carried out within your comfort range, with a strong focus on body awareness and ease. When practised correctly, it is widely regarded as a safe and supportive approach.
Dorn therapy usually begins by checking leg length. It's quite common for people with back discomfort to present with an apparent leg length difference. In many cases, this is not a true structural difference but may be linked to imbalances around the hips and pelvis.
Imbalances in the hips and pelvis can influence overall posture and may contribute to asymmetry through the body. This can sometimes be reflected in how the spine is positioned.
If appropriate, gentle Dorn Method techniques are used to support balance in these areas. This may also include working with the knee and ankle joints, as they form part of the body's overall alignment.
The pelvis is then assessed for balance, followed by a gentle check of the spine — including the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical regions — with adjustments made as needed, always within a comfortable and natural range of movement.
Working Through the Spine
After checking leg length and hip alignment, the session progresses systematically through the body:
You Actively Participate
In the Dorn Method, you are actively involved in every step. Simple, gentle movements — such as swinging a leg or arm, or turning the head — are used alongside the treatment.
This keeps the muscles engaged and helps the joints move more easily within their natural range. Because of this, the technique avoids force and feels calm, controlled, and supportive throughout.
Combined with Breuss Massage
The Dorn Method session can be complemented by a gentle spinal massage known as the Breuss Massage.
This is a calm and relaxing treatment that focuses on the back, using light, sensitive pressure techniques to help ease tension and support overall comfort. A herbal oil, such as St John's Wort oil, is often applied and gently worked into the tissues around the spine.
The aim of the Breuss Massage is to encourage relaxation, support the natural mobility of the spine, and create a sense of space and ease through the back. Many people experience it as deeply soothing and restorative.
If the body feels particularly tense, a session may begin with the Breuss Massage to help the muscles relax. More commonly, it is offered after the Dorn Method treatment to further support relaxation and overall well-being.
